About Us

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

At SLTs of Colour, we are deeply committed to addressing health inequalities in therapy. It's time for open and honest conversations about the changes needed in our profession. We prioritise amplifying the voices of those affected by these inequalities, learning from best practices, and paving the way for tangible action. As therapists from the global majority, we stand at the forefront of this movement, ready to take meaningful steps towards a more equitable future. Let's initiate vital discussions, implement necessary changes, and collectively work towards a profession and wider health landscape that serves everyone equitably.

Our Story

In 2020, the world was waking up. The murder of George Floyd brought long-standing racial injustices to light. At the same time, COVID-19 laid bare deep health inequalities, exposing how those already marginalised often suffer more. It was a moment of reckoning.

In that climate, SLTs of Colour was born: a tapestry of stories, voices, and hope woven together. What began as conversation has grown into a movement. We came together not just to speak — but to listen, to heal, to disrupt, to build.

Because in speech and language therapy, communication is the invisible thread. It connects health, education, family, culture, identity. Yet too often, that thread is strained — cut by systems that undervalue some voices, privilege others, and silence those already on the fringes.

We saw therapists, students, and communities of colour navigating barriers across placements, training, workplaces, and care systems. We heard stories of disconnection, invisibility, burn-out, exclusion. Yet in each story, there was strength, wisdom, longing for belonging.

SLTs of Colour is a space of belonging for therapists from the global majority — a circle where stories are woven, voices amplified, and healing begins. Diversity, inclusion, and antiracism are not add-ons; they are the warp and weft of our mission.

We stand for equity. We stand for justice. We stand for every voice that has been silenced, ignored, or shaped by systems not built for them.

Everyone who shares this vision — therapists, organisations, families, students — is welcome to join the circle, to join the weave, to build a more inclusive and equitable future.
